AF Joy's 100 Year Anniversary in Wareham

In April 2026, AF Joy proudly celebrates 100 years of trading in Wareham —  an extraordinary milestone for an independent family business that has become part of the town’s fabric.

The story begins in 1926...

The story begins with Albert Fowler Joy, who moved to Wareham from Weymouth after serving in the First World War. He became manager of George Symes Outfitters in South Street (on the site where KW Chinese Takeaway stands today).

In 1925, when Alex J. Hicks of Blandford Forum purchased most of the shops in South Street — including George Symes Outfitters — Mr Joy found himself no longer required. Undeterred, he purchased HC Cull and Son, a cycle and cycle repair shop at 35 North Street.

Mr Joy sold off the cycle stock and completely restocked the premises as a gentlemen’s outfitters. On 1st April 1926 — exactly 100 years ago this year — he opened the doors of AF Joy Outfitters.

Surviving turbulent history

The business traded successfully through some of the most turbulent periods in modern history. AF Joy survived the Great Depression of the 1930s, the hardship and uncertainty of the Second World War, years of post-war rationing, economic recessions, and sweeping social change. A century later, the business also adapted through the rapid rise of online retail and the unprecedented challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Change of owners

Mr Joy continued to run the business until his retirement in October 1947, when Thomas W. Barnes purchased the shop. He retained the name AF Joy — affectionately known locally as “Joys” — and continued to build on its strong reputation.

The shop expanded at the rear of the premises in 1976 and again in 1986, reflecting continued growth. In 1996, the shop front was replaced, giving the business a refreshed look while maintaining its traditional character.

Merville and Zoe

In 1965, a young Saturday boy named Merville joined the business — a moment that would prove pivotal in its history.  Following Thomas Barnes’ death in August 1983, Merville became Managing Director. In April 2001, he purchased AF Joy from the Barnes family, securing its independent future.

Since 2016, Merville and Zoe have run the business together, continuing the legacy set out by Mr Joy and Mr Barnes.

Working with local schools

Today, School-wear forms an important part of the business. AF Joy now supplies school uniform to families across the area, working closely with local schools to provide quality garments, professional embroidery and personal fitting services.

Each summer, the shop welcomes generations of families preparing for new school years — many of whom remember being fitted for their own uniforms there as children. Supporting local families at important milestones remains at the heart of what AF Joy does.

Wedding hire

Wedding hire is another proud part of the business. For decades, AF Joy has helped grooms and their wedding parties look their best on one of the most important days of their lives. From traditional morning suits to contemporary styles, the shop provides expert fitting and personal guidance — often dressing multiple generations of the same family over the years. Being trusted to play a small part in such special occasions is something the team never takes for granted.

Dedicated staff

AF Joy’s success has also been built on the dedication of its staff over the decades — from long-serving team members to Saturday assistants and work experience students, all of whom have played a valued role in the shop’s story.

Merville and Zoe are supported by a small, dedicated team, Liz, Kay and Christine, whose hard work and commitment are an invaluable part of the business today.

An anniversary to be proud of

Reflecting on the centenary, Merville and Zoe say:

“Reaching 100 years is something we feel incredibly proud of. So many independent businesses don’t make it this far, and we are very aware that we wouldn’t be here without the loyalty and support of our customers and the wider community.

We feel privileged to continue the work started by Mr Joy in 1926 and carried forward by Mr Thomas Barnes. Our aim is simple — to offer quality products, personal service and to remain a trusted part of Wareham for many years to come.”

From a former cycle shop in 1926 to a thriving independent retailer in 2026, AF Joy’s story is woven into the history of Wareham itself.

Here’s to their next 100 years!
