Fretful Federation Mandolin Orchestra concert

The Brighton-based Fretful Federation Mandolin Orchestra was founded in 1995 with the goal of reviving the tradition of mandolin orchestras which were hugely popular in the UK up until the 1930s. Over the years it has grown and developed into a thriving and successful community group with its own nearly 30-year history.

Consisting of players from throughout Sussex, the group plays a wide range of material including exciting contemporary music by living composers as well as classical and popular pieces on mandolins, mandolas, guitars, cello and bass.

The orchestra performs all over Sussex and has toured abroad. The Purbeck Festival concert will feature its usual eclectic and entertaining mix as well as Vivaldi’s fabulous Guitar Concerto in D with guest soloist Sam Brown, who is also performing at the festival on the night before, Thursday 26 June with Daniel Thompson. Programme for the Fretful Federation Mandolin Orchestra Concert on the 27th June

The Fretful Federation Mandolin Orchestra brings a vibrant and varied programme to this year’s Purbeck Guitar Festival, showcasing the rich versatility of the mandolin and its orchestral family. Their concert will take you on a musical journey through centuries and continents — from the baroque elegance of Vivaldi’s Guitar Concerto in D Major and the classical charm of Cecere’s Sinfonia in Sol Maggiore, to the soulful lyricism of Fernando Sor’s Variations on a Theme of Mozart. Contemporary highlights include the rhythmic vitality of Victor Kioulaphides’ Concerto de Camera, the atmospheric Guitar Concerto No. 2 by Oluf Näslund, and the evocative Greek Suite by Manos Hadjidakis. Rounding out the programme are Kithara by Eileen Packenham, and the stirring anthem Music Was My First Love by John Miles — a fitting celebration of the joy and power of music. Full programme below…
