Community comes together in a powerful tribute walk raising vital funds for Forest Holme Hospice

As the sun dipped below the horizon on a warm Dorset evening, more than 450 people came together for a truly special cause—walking, remembering, and supporting their local hospice.

The inaugural Sunset Walk, organised by Forest Holme Hospice Charity, saw participants of all ages gather at Branksome Dene before making their way դեպի the top of Evening Hill. There, they paused to take in breathtaking views across Sandbanks and Poole Harbour—a moment of reflection that was both poignant and uplifting.

‘Emotional and uplifting’

For many, the walk was deeply personal. It was a chance to remember loved ones, share stories, and connect with others who understand the importance of hospice care in our community.

The event was made possible with the support of Care South, with sponsorship from Marjorie House. Staff and residents joined the walk themselves, adding to the strong sense of togetherness that carried throughout the evening.

Claire Cooper, Events and Challenges Manager at Forest Holme Hospice Charity, said:
“It was incredibly special to see so many people come together for our very first Sunset Walk. The atmosphere was both emotional and uplifting, with people taking time to reflect, connect, share stories and support one another along the way. For many, it was a deeply personal experience, as well as a way to support the hospice.”

Along the route, thoughtful touches helped keep spirits high, with Rapid Relief Team providing much-needed water, and a warm welcome back at Branksome Dene thanks to delicious refreshments from Pizza with Love.

So far, the event has raised an incredible £16,000, helping to ensure Forest Holme can continue delivering compassionate palliative and end-of-life care to local people and their families.

Claire added:
“We are so grateful to everyone who took part, our wonderful volunteers, staff and residents at Marjorie House for their support, plus Rapid Relief, and Pizza With Love, all of whom played a part in making the evening such a success. We look forward to doing it again next year.”

For those who may not be familiar, Forest Holme Hospice provides specialist care and support to more than 1,500 people each year across Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck. As part of University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, the hospice delivers expert medical, emotional and practical care—but relies on charitable fundraising to go above and beyond, raising around £1 million annually.

From care at home to support within the hospice itself, Forest Holme’s dedicated teams are there for patients and families during life’s most challenging moments—offering not only medical expertise, but compassion, dignity and understanding.

And if this year’s Sunset Walk is anything to go by, it’s clear that the local community will continue to walk right alongside them.
