A Towering Tribute in Wool
Don’t miss a chance to see the remarkable Poppy installation in Wool in tribute for Remembrance Day
Over 5000 poppies!
An incredible sight now graces the Holy Rood Church in Wool — a breathtaking cascade of more than 5,000 handmade poppies, created by the Guerrilla Gardeners Wool and the local community to commemorate Remembrance Day.
A year in the making, this remarkable installation stands 17 metres long on the 13 metre tower (that’s as tall as three double-decker buses!) and serves as a powerful reminder of all those who have lost their lives in wars and recent conflicts. We will remember them.
What began as an ambitious idea — to transform a donated army camouflage net into a sweeping poppy display — soon became a true community effort. Volunteers came together to wash, cut, and rejoin the massive net before sewing thousands of knitted and crocheted poppies onto it by hand.
The journey wasn’t without its challenges — from figuring out how to clean and reassemble a 10-metre net, to safely hoisting the finished cascade from the church tower — but the determination, creativity, and teamwork of everyone involved made it possible.
'A labour of love'
Susan Burroughs from the Guerrilla Gardeners said:
“A huge thanks must go to all those who helped today and along the way. This has been a real labour of love, and we couldn’t have done it without our wonderful community.”
The installation is a stunning example of what can be achieved when people come together with passion and purpose — and a beautiful tribute to those we honour this Remembrance Day. ❤️
The installation will be on display until Thursday 13th November.
