Rethinking Rubbish - in action at Not Just Sundaes Community Cafe in Wareham

Rethinking Rubbish – in action!

Rethinking Rubbish - in action on Saturday 2nd November in Wareham is a special recycling centre set up by Sustainable Wareham...

Sustainable Wareham's new recycling morning at Not Just Sundaes!

A chance for you to rethink and recycle your rubbish - that you can't normally put in your household bins!

De-clutter and help save the planet!

Have you ever wanted to recycle more than the stuff you regularly put in your household bins that get collected by the council? Would you like to reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill?

If the answer to these questions is YES, community group Sustainable Wareham are here to help!  As a special pilot they will collect a whole range of items, in collaboration with Win on Waste.  So have a look through your waste destined for the landfill and they will gladly take them from you, and can guarantee that (unlike much soft plastic ‘recycling’), they won’t end up being incinerated.  Take along:

  • Babybel Wrappers
  • Cheese Wrappers
  • Corks (wine, champagne etc)
  • Dental Waste – plastic toothbrushes, electric toothbrush heads, interdental brushes
  • Greetings Cards
  • Keys and Padlocks
  • Make Up (empty)
  • Marigold type rubber gloves and packaging
  • Mobile Phones
  • Plastic Lunchboxes & Drinks Bottles (rigid type, refillable bottles, not the sort that go into your regular collection)
  • Printer ink cartridges
  • Stamps & Coins
  • Watches & Jewellery – even broken
  • Wires, cables and chargers
  • Yeo Valley “Yeo Tokens” unredeemed

Recycling through Sustainable Wareham will help raise money for charity!

Many of these items are recycled through Win on Waste’s connections with Terracycle, and others, like the stamps, old cables and greetings cards are used to raise money for charities.

Blister pack collection at our 'Rethinking Rubbish' event

Jane Lewis – the event organiser was also pleased to confirm that Blister Packs would also collected for recycling at Saturday’s event at NJS.

“Many Wareham residents were disappointed when we had to close our project to collect used blister packs. However, we are pleased to say that at our event on 2nd November, we will also be funding a bag (from www.terracycle.com) to relieve you of some of them.

As this is our first event of this type, we are limiting the number of blister packs (cut up, so we can fit more in the bag, if possible) to a maximum of 20 per person. We are asking for a small donation towards the £39.00 which it costs to buy a bag through Terracycle.

Although we feel that the onus should be on the pharmaceutical companies to take responsibility for producing more environmentally friendly packaging, in the meantime, we want to try and prevent as much of this waste as possible from ending up in landfill. With sufficient funding, we could even purchase a larger container and be able to take more blisterpacks and save them from landfill.”

A Pilot Scheme for Wareham

This pilot collection event is also current and timely. According to an article in the Guardian  – Tuesday 8th October 2024 “Britons urged to dig out unwanted electricals to tackle copper shortage, a study has found that here in the UK, there are large amounts of copper to be found in our homes, in old cables, chargers and other old, unused electrical goods. So, as the article suggests, please go ‘urban mining’! Take the cables to the Rethinking Rubbish event and old, unused electrical goods can go to Wareham Waste and Recycling Centre.

Plus Tea, Coffee and Home-made cake! So – have a look through your rubbish headed for landfill, and see if there is anything on the list. Go along  on Saturday morning 2nd November – it’s just across the road from the Market. Have a cup of tea or coffee and some homemade cake.   If this is successful – Sustainable Wareham hope to make it a regular feature – which will also support local community café Not Just Sundaes which has recently re-opened and is keen to support community events.
