The Duke Returns – a fresh new chapter for a Wareham favourite

A well-known Wareham pub has entered a new era following a major refurbishment, a fresh management team and a complete rebrand. Since taking over The Duke in January 2026, landlord Carl and his growing team have been working behind the scenes to transform the venue into a welcoming social hub, focused on quality food, great drinks and a strong family atmosphere.
“It’s been a great experience so far and I want to thank everyone for coming in and supporting us,” says Carl, who spent the first few months preparing the business ahead of its relaunch.
Joining the project in March, Robbie is now Head Chef and future business partner. Jamie has also recently joined, and has been handling admin, social media, menus and branding.
Their aim is to give Wareham residents, and tourists, a safe and welcoming place to visit. The key objectives were to provide a family friendly atmosphere; serve freshly cooked food at affordable prices and offering dishes that are unique to the area, including local fish and twists on some old favourites.
A focus on great drinks
Carl has personally selected some amazing ales which are constantly being updated, and his cellar work is second to none, as well as the ales.
They’ve introduced a new unique cocktail menu, including the ‘Dead Cool and Trendy’, which is a real winner.
Happy Hour now runs every day from 3pm–6pm except Sunday, with selected pints, cocktails and spritz offers helping to create a lively after-work atmosphere throughout the week.

Fresh food with local influence
They regularly refresh their menus and daily specials. Fresh fish dishes, smoked meats, sharing plates and rotating specials now sit alongside classic comfort food.
The Sunday roasts’ meat is locally sourced, and supplied by Curtis Butchers in Wareham. It’s no surpise that they have already developed a loyal following, with customers praising both the quality and generous portions.
One recent customer review summed it up perfectly:
“Wow!! Hats off to Carl and his staff… Roast dinner is to die for!! No cooking on a Sunday in the Willmott household from now on in!! Amazing food! Amazing staff…”
