Local Morris Dancing Group
By Maureen Day, Dorset Buttons
‘Dorset Buttons’ is not just decorative buttons! We are a Morris Dance Group named after the very old tradition of button-making which lasted from the 1600s until the 1800s.The decorative buttons which cover our hats are based on a traditional wheel design.Â
Dancing since 1978 in Dorset!
Dressed in flowing red and green dresses, we have been dancing and raising money for charity since 1978. Founded in Wareham by a handful of ladies (including Maggie Colman who still dances with us), Dorset Buttons follow the traditional dances of North-West England, and in the early days we attended festivals on tour in America, France and Germany. We have always been wonderfully supported by our band of musicians, led by Dave Hinton.Â
Men's Rapper Dance Group joins us
In 1991, the men in the band formed a dance team called ‘Rapper’; they joined the ladies’ side during the Summer months but have also developed their own independent program wearing white logoed shirts and black trousers and brandishing swords!Â
Dorset Buttons Rapper Groups - Dancing from May - December
Now, as then, we dance weekly on Wednesdays @ 8pm outside local pubs from May to September, last year raising over £900 for the ‘Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance’. This year we are collecting for ‘Heartbeat’, a charity which supports people who have had major life-changing heart surgery in Southampton Hospital, such as Tony, one of our Rapper dancers.Â
